Great snippet. For the record, the show Phil was talking about was, I believe, 9/30/67 as Mickey's debut. 2 hours of Alligator > Caution or whatever. Those shows from the Straight Theater are mythological white whales, to be sure...

I can taste the acid on the tip of my tongue just listening to this little snippet of jam. Sounds like a John Coltrane "Love Supreme" tease at about 1:20 of Caution. Sound quality is a bit rustic but listenable.

I wonder what the rest of the set was like. As it is, this would be great for recreating the feeling of an acid freakout.

One of the first "Feedbacks"
I've listened to every show here at archive from 1965 to this show, and this is the first one that has an extended feedback section.
The growth of the band in the previous 8 months was pretty amazing, moving from a blues standards (with psychedelic jams) phase to the Anthem of the Sun period of more complex original compositions.

i betcha my little pal and i were the only 5 1/2 year olds in that hall that day. they didn't play anything like my folks' music. they were all kinda scary, those hippies, but they were awful nice to us and the girl with boobs i could see was dancing with me.

why i gave this five stars
this is very sentimental.....why?....because it was the day i was born.

First Mickey sit in?
Reading Phills "The Search for Sound" he talks about playing this gig, and that Mickey sat in for the first time towards the end of the show. Aliligator/caution/feedback as Phil recalls it. After the show Jerry turned to Mickey, hugged him, and said "THIS is he Grateful Dead".
If you havnt had the chance, It's a good read!

This and the previous date were what made up tapes that were labeled "Russian River '68".....? Anyone else know about this? It has been 20 years since I heard the tape that disappeared back then, so I have nothing to compare to.....

Here's another case where the set list on this site and in Deadbase 8 is listed as one thing (Dark Star Jam) while the audio available here is something different - Caution>Feedback. I don't have the time to check this version against others, so I'm not sure.

Nice little piece, great for filler... good sound. You can hear the tape splice in the beginning.
